This was the best transformation. If Luffy kept the shadows permanently he'd be op now. Also in the games it confirmed Luffy had other devil fruit powers from the shadows he consumed. One of his devil fruit power in the nightmare form allowed him to ignite sake in his mouth and breathe fire with it. This form was op as heck. If current Luffy went into nightmare mode with all his gears the guy would be a god. Heck he'd probably even be able to hold more shadows with how powerful he has gotten.
